    DETAIL

With the main theme as ‘Inside Out ; Beyond Space’, this exhibition invites three veteran artists, Hyungmoo Kim, Soyoung Lee, and Solim Cha, who are working on the artworks of formative technique of surrealism, and explores their perception of space. The exhibition begins with a question on the difference between artists of 21st century that use surreal formative language and artists of 20th century that use surrealism.

Hyungmoo Kim works with cloned images cut out from magazines and collate these images into a space created by himself. The photo montage and collage are techniques of tradition, and they are meaningful in that the reality is directly attached to the artwork. The artist inserts glimpse of reality into ‘place that doesn’t exist anywhere’. This space is a space that humans have never experienced before and seems like a space of reality; yet, it is a space beyond reality, which is of 21st century.

Soyoung Lee’s work, ‘Art Museum’ series, is centered around renowned works of great artists and composing them into existing museums. The space where Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Duchamp, Caspar David Fredrich, and El Greco., etc. is positioned is closely related to the artist and is chosen by judging the space as the most suitable place for the work among the various spaces of the museums which she experienced herself. The artist interprets the space with time and explores the spatiality of the space through overlapping records of photographs. She empties her consciousness and inserts and attaches the works of the past in the erased space. The past great works are reborn as the work of Soyoung Lee.

Solim Cha has been working for a while being obsessed with the multi-layered structure of meaning of reality. She has been working on texts as a symbol for understanding the structure of meaning. She utilizes automatism (a way of avoiding conscious thinking and drawing pictures as ideas flow) to paint symbols and numbers within space and arithmetic that are far from consciousness. It seems to be looking beyond a space that is beyond human consciousness.
