    DETAIL

In this exhibition, “From flatness……”, Doyun Gwon, Haiminsun Lee, and Seungean Cha will participate.

Doyun Gwon expresses the appearance of a distorted book, which has been cracked and torn over a long period of time that is no longer functioning, in a black and white photograph. Books possess a lot of knowledge, information, and infinite imagination with a unique shape. However, the deformed book in the picture is lost in its nature and remains in the shape of a distorted book. The artist seems to feel liberated after the heavy duty of a book is removed and is now only left with pure nature of paper. The images and texts that are revealed through the folds of puffy book lead to a greater imagination.

Haiminsun Lee’s work ‘Puddle’ series starts with dissolving the images on the photographs using chemical. The image that has melted only remains as the substance of the ink. The artist leaves traces of the brush on the residue ink through brushing it several times. The traces collected look like chunk on a flat surface and a puddle of ink. In her latest’s work, the ‘chunk’ series, she uses oil paintings to draw chunks on a flat surface with repeated brush strokes on a square canvas or paper. In the ‘Peaks’ series, in a rectangular frame, there is a mountain where the peak has been cut off, and a reproduced mountain without peak in front of it. The artist mentioned, “It is not a recreation of incomplete mountain cut out by the frame; yet, it is a recreation of the shape of a complete mountain drawn on the picture as it is.”

Seungean Cha expresses an abstract image through creating an image with tapestry of woven fabric with colored threads, and painting on top of it. A cloth with painted threads and dyed threads weaved on a loom to create an abstract image in several patterns is finally attached to a standard canvas frame to be completed. This work of the artist, which strongly reveals the characteristics of weaving, more thoroughly expresses the objectified canvas that was emphasized in an abstract painting of the past 20th century, in a new format more meticulously. In addition, the geometric abstract image, which is woven and patterned with dyed warp, makes the flatness of the abstract modernist painting more prominent.
