    DETAIL

    Space: Emptiness, Depth, Light

021 GALLERY is honored to introduce the works of art by three artists:

    Park Han-saem, Shin Sun-joo, Jeong Bo-young.

Communicating with space, they have created their artworks, by awakening all the senses, experiencing and thinking. On the main theme 'Space', they explore emptiness, depth, and light.

What does space mean to the artists?

Although we go past the familiar places heedlessly, living surrounded by space, the artists are performing a pictorial experiment with space, persistently looking at and contemplating and interacting with it. Three artists of this exhibition will offer you precious opportunities to get into a warm, calm, and deep conversation with space.

The painter Park Han-saem paints with traditional Korean ink on the hanji, traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees and traditional Korean drawing paper. In the world of space and time that he has experienced and faced, he expresses the feelings deliberately with traditional Korean ink. The process in which he keeps a real landscape in mind and draws it on the Korean traditional paper is similar to the one in which Jeong Seon(16761759), a Korean landscape painter, expressed the aesthetics of 'true view' landscape paintings. However, he examines the body's responses to the world of space and time on the scene and captures them on the traditional Korean paper. This is the 'third space' that he hopes visitors empathize with as closely as possible. Opening all his senses, to create visually the feelings of events engraved in his mind, he draws and erases over and over again and sometimes introduces the additional devices such as making intentionally different the wall of an exhibition hall and the brightness of the floor.

His recent 'Island' series of paintings express space by emphasis and omission.

The space of an island creates a distinct boundary by black and white in the margin. The soaring island is expressed with detailed and delicate brush strokes.

The painter Shin Sun-joo majored in both painting and photography. Photography is not a means to paint but a working process to her. She paints landscapes on canvas which are obtained through the camera lens. Using the sticky and soft quality of oil pastel, she makes the ground of canvas black, scratching and erasing it with a sharp needle and an awl by endless repetition. This process brings new aspects and new feelings to the ground of canvas. The intensely completed work makes it possible to express delicate and fine lines. It is like mezzotint called 'the black tonal method'.

Before the invention of photography, the mezzotint techniques used for making painting replicas consistently lead to her paintings, supported by the perceived sensation and abstract ideas.

The black color in these series of works has become her distinctive characteristic, 'Beauty of Black'. She has a unique thought about blackness. The black tone of a coarse but soft ebony that she has used as material reveals sharply the properties of objects. Using her favorite black color, she expresses the symbol of space that the silent buildings have had while enduring the intolerable burden of time.

The painter Jeong Bo-young deals with light as her subject. She looks at real space consistently and inspires life in silent space. What brings the speechless space to life is light, air flow, temperature and wind. Depending on its amount and density, space gets life of a wide variety of expressions. With the mobility of light, She projects candle light, electric light, light out of window, and aspects of light into indoor space, filling and dividing light and darkness.

She deals with light not to emphasize it as an existing object but to paint the sublime space in which we don't know where we come and go. The space is also the world that boundary of time creates.

Starting from the boundary of time, light comes and goes indoors and outdoors, making the objects appear in sequence. The space of darkness and lightness she depicts is mysterious and warm.
