Seungean Cha solo exhibition : Wall Hangings
Seungean Cha combines textile crafts and fine art in her work, weaving the fabric on a loom and dyeing or painting it. In this solo exhibition, "Wall Hangings," Cha presents 20 works that continue to experiment with new ways of weaving.
"I
create paintings through weaving in reference to Korean and Western modern
abstract paintings.
I
intend to revisit the era of Korean abstract art in 1960-70s and examine how
the Western style, which was introduced without historical context, was defined
in
Now,
as we experience the past as vivid as the present through flattened space and
time due to the effects of various media including smart devices, now is the
time to rearrange the past with the time and experiences that were bound up too
soon in rapid modernization.
Weaving
is the kind of method that has a set time sequence that is incapable of rapid
growth. I chose it as the method to realize the topic I am discussing, in
the sense that it refuses to proceed to the next step without going through its
own specific time and process. Using my own hands to weave the canvas, I dye
the weft and warp threads, build patterns by inserting colored threads, or
paint on the complete canvas in reference to the icons found in abstract
painting such as the grid or brush stroke.
I would like to examine what was defined too soon in the past and what is meaningful in abstract painting now by incarnating in canvases imageless images of handicraft labor, weaving, which can’t skip over time."
